Adler Action Day Nov. 1: The mental health implications of being undocumented
Our next Adler Action Day is coming up Nov. 1, as the Adler School Institute on Public Safety and Social Justice (IPSSJ) hosts an important panel discussion and the opportunity to take action on immigration reform.
The panel discussion “A Dream Deferred: The Mental Health Implications of Being Undocumented” will focus on the mental health needs of undocumented individuals–especially students–who in many cases came to the United States at very young ages and are now unable to secure legal jobs, receive student loans or drivers’ licenses, travel abroad, or escape the constant fear and possibility of deportation.
A panel of experts will discuss the issues from a mental health perspective, examine what it takes to serve the needs of the undocumented, and provide information about the DREAM Act, relevant legislation, and ways to get involved. Panelists include:
- Dr. Sonali Gupta, Core Faculty, Adler School of Professional Psychology
- Jacky Luna, Heartland Alliance Violence Recovery Services, Little Village
- Stephen Smith, Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights
- Reyna Wences, speaking to personal experience related to immigration reform
The panel discussion will take place 3:30 to 5 p.m. Nov. 1 at the Adler School. The event is free but registration is required due to limited seating. RSVP to ipssj@adler.edu.
Join us throughout the day to write to your senator urging action on immigration reform. See you there!
Dr. Roberto Gonzalez of the SSA at University of Chicago will join the panel as an expert on the transition to adulthood made by undocumented people
